In northern Thailand, it is traditional to serve rice in decent bamboo rice pots. The rice is shaped neatly in the container and then each guest will be served their own basket. In accordance with ancient Thai customs, rice should always be covered during the course of a meal. For this reason, woven baskets are very practical as they help the rice both humid and hot. In northern Thailand and Laos, the bottom of the basket is often coated with a sandwich bag and a damp cheesecloth inserved between the rice and the nested lid.
